On the Apple Sierra web page there is a link that you can check if your model will run 10.11. Some older Macs (like my 2009 Mac Pro) just fell off the upgrade path. The Steps for Upgrading to Mac OS X El 10.11 Capitan. The following is steps for upgrading to Mac OS X 10.11 Capitan: Visit the Mac App Store. Locate the OS X El Capitan Page. Click the Download button. Follow the simple instructions to complete the upgrade. For users without broadband access, the upgrade is available at the local Apple store. Apple’s latest version of OS X is called El Capitan (officially, it’s version 10.11). El Capitan does some fine-tuning to the Mac operating system, and it also has major updates to Safari.

- Most everything that is 10.12 is 10.13 compatible. Both have the same system requirements. I would backup your data before proceeding. It is only the 10.11 update that requires you to have 10.6.8 on your Mac first. Weird requirement from Apple to be certain. At least the 10.13 update does not.
- If you’re running High Sierra (10.13), Sierra (10.12), or El Capitan (10.11), upgrade to macOS Catalina from the App Store. If you’re running Lion (10.7) or Mountain Lion (10.8), you will need to upgrade to El Capitan (10.11) first. If you don’t have broadband access, you can upgrade your Mac at any Apple Store.

Upgrade from previous versions to OS X 10.11 (El Capitan)
- From the Apple menu, select App Store...
- When the App Store opens, search for and download El Capitan. If you don't already have an Apple ID, you'll need to create one. You can monitor the download process in the 'Purchased' section of the App Store.
- Once the download is complete, the installer should automatically open.If it doesn't, or you don't want to complete the installation at this time, you can come back later and double-click Install OS X El Capitan in your
Applications
folder.Within the installer, click Continue, agree to the license agreement, and then choose the disk where you want to install El Capitan.After you begin the installation, your computer may need to restart more than once before finishing, and then you may be asked to enter basic information. - From the Apple menu, select App Store.., and then install any available updates.
Reinstall El Capitan on a computer already running it
To reinstall or recover El Capitan, you must have an active internet connection. If you are on campus at IU, UITS recommends the wired Ethernet network instead of wireless. However, if IUSecure is your only option, see Connect to an IU wireless network in macOS if booted from your Recovery HD.
Reinstall while keeping files, applications, and settings
- Restart your computer, and immediately hold down
command-r
until the gray Apple logo appears. - If prompted, select your main language and then click the arrow.
- Click Reinstall OS X, and then Continue. Follow the instructions on the screen, and then choose your hard disk. Click Install, and enter your Apple ID information if prompted.
- When the installation is complete, select App Store.. from the Apple menu, and install any available updates.
Reinstall while erasing everything on your computer
- Restart your computer, and immediately hold down
command-r
until the gray Apple logo appears. - If you see a screen asking you to select your main language, choose it, and then click the arrow.
- Click Disk Utility, and then Continue.
- In Disk Utility:
- Click your hard disk in the left column, and then click the Erase tab.
- Next to 'Format:', make sure OS X Extended (Journaled) is selected. In the 'Name:' field, give your disk a name. Click Erase.
- Once it's completed, quit Disk Utility.
- Click Reinstall OS X, and then Continue:
- Follow the instructions on the screen, and then choose your hard disk.
- Click Install. If prompted, enter your Apple ID information.
- Once the installation is complete, you'll be asked to enter basic information, and have the option to transfer data from another computer or backup.
- From the Apple menu, select App Store, and then install any available updates.

Check compatibility
You can upgrade to macOS Mojave from OS X Mountain Lion or later on any of the following Mac models. Your Mac also needs at least 2GB of memory and 12.5GB of available storage space, or up to 18.5GB of storage space when upgrading from OS X Yosemite or earlier.

To find your Mac model, memory, storage space, and macOS version, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu . If your Mac isn't compatible with macOS Mojave, the installer will let you know.
Make a backup
Before installing any upgrade, it’s a good idea to back up your Mac. Time Machine makes it simple, and other backup methods are also available. Learn how to back up your Mac.
Get connected
It takes time to download and install macOS, so make sure that you have a reliable Internet connection. If you're using a Mac notebook computer, plug it into AC power.
Download macOS Mojave
For the strongest security and latest features, find out whether you can upgrade to macOS Catalina, the latest version of the Mac operating system. Where is fn on mac keyboard.

Begin installation
After downloading, the installer opens automatically.
Click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions. You might find it easiest to begin installation in the evening so that it can complete overnight, if needed.
Upgrade Mac To 10.11
If the installer asks for permission to install a helper tool, enter the administrator name and password that you use to log in to your Mac, then click Add Helper. Oppo share mac.
Allow installation to complete
Please allow installation to complete without putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. Your Mac might restart, show a progress bar, or show a blank screen several times as it installs both macOS and related updates to your Mac firmware.

- If you have hardware or software that isn't compatible with Mojave, you might be able to install an earlier macOS, such as High Sierra, Sierra, or El Capitan.
- macOS Mojave won't install on top of a later version of macOS, but you can erase your disk first or install on another disk.
